Love Your Lips!

Love Your Lips!

Since our previous blogs focused more on the skin and its care, it’s time to focus on the lips.  Now that spring has sprung and we’re headed into the warmest months of the year, it’s time to focus on one of our best features: our lips.  Neglecting lip care during the summer months can lead to dryness, sun damage, and even painful cracks. Fear not, for we've compiled some tips to help you keep your lips soft, supple, and ready for all your summer adventures.

Hydration is Key – Just like your skin, your lips need adequate hydration, especially in hot weather.  Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and lips hydrated from the inside out.  Dehydration can lead to dry, chapped lips, so aim to drink at least eight glasses of water daily.

Shield Your Lips from the Sun – The sun’s UV rays can be harsh on your lips, leading to sunburn, premature aging, and even an increased risk of skin cancer. Invest in a lip balm with SPF protection and make sure to reapply it regularly, especially if you'll be outside for an extended period of time. Look for a broad-spectrum lip balm with an SPF of at least 30 for optimal protection.

Exfoliate Gently – Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells, leaving your lips soft and smooth.  However, be gentle when exfoliating your lips, as they are more delicate than the skin on the rest of your face.  Use a soft toothbrush or a lip scrub with gentle exfoliating particles to buff away dry, flaky skin. Limit exfoliation to once or twice a week to avoid irritation.

Avoid Licking Your Lips – Those of us who remember when that was LL Cool J’s trademark, know for licking his lips.  Keep in mind, while it may provide temporary relief to dry lips, licking your lips can actually worsen dryness and lead to further irritation. Saliva contains enzymes that can break down the delicate skin on your lips, leaving them more vulnerable to dryness and cracking. Instead of licking your lips, reach for your favorite lip balm to provide relief.

Treat Your Lips Overnight – Make the most of those skin care tips we provided and include your lips’ care, too.  Treat them to an intensive overnight routine.  Apply a thick layer of hydrating lip balm, gloss or petroleum jelly before bed to seal in moisture and repair any damage incurred during the day.  Our Glossy Lip Gloss would be perfect protection for your lips, day or night.  You should check it out here.

With these essential lip care tips in your arsenal, you can enjoy all the summer fun without worrying about dry, chapped lips. Remember to stay hydrated, shield your lips from the sun, exfoliate gently, moisturize regularly, avoid licking your lips, choose gentle products, and treat your lips to some extra TLC overnight.  Here’s to a summer season filled with soft, supple lips and endless summer adventures!
